Flying Low
Irene Cioni is a choreographer, dancer and teacher based in London and Florence.
Trained at Balletto di Toscana in Italy and at the Amsterdam University of The Arts, where she studied intensively with Katie Duck, Ballet C de la B, Ultima Vez, Nigel Charnock and Wendy Houston (DV8) many other exponents of contemporary European dance.
In 2001 she joined the Silenda Company in Paris with the production Flaneurs; since then she has toured the world dancing her own work and that of others, including: Hans Tuerlings, Sara Wookey, TPO Company, Leila Macmillan, Ludo Ludis Teatro Contemporaneo, Fleur Darkin Company, Secret Cinema and Odin Teatret.
With the support of Odin Teatret in 2005 she travels with a large scale theatre project of three months in Argentina, where she works with communities in the Andes, Students of the University of the Arts and the Hopballehus theatre ensemble at the Teatro De La Cooperation in Buenos Aires with the show The Monkey.
Debut in London at The Place Resolution! 2011 with the dance duo Aquarium, defined by the press as “simple but exquisite; satisfying, fresh and forward-looking”.
In 2013 Irene becomes an associate artist of the Riotous Company directed by Mia Theil Have and internationally renowned actress and director Kathryn Hunter, performing, co-producing and creating shows such as Insomnia, a dramatic pas de deux for 2 female dancers and a pianist.
In London she develops a work that blends dance, theatre and art and initiates new collaborations both in live performances and on screen, collaborating with theatre players, directors, musicians, dancers, models, actors and writers to create a meaningful and impactful work.
Lately the work of choreography and movement includes theatrical productions such as: Inside Bitch by Clean Break at the Royal Court Theatre; See Me Now at the Young Vic Theatre by Look Left Look Right Company; Ergo Sum by Sleight Of Hand Theatre at the Barbican. Tonight I’m gonna be the new me, Soho Theatre and Super Duper Close Up both of the company Made in China Theatre, where she has created several dances for actress Jessica Latowicki, praised as “Superb choreography” by Reviews Hub.
More recently, her choreographies have been featured in the COS Active Wear Move advertising campaign. Better; followed by Inverter and The Body Structure, a series of short films in collaboration with English director Teddy Powell.
In 2018, Irene became a free space artist at Wayne McGregor Studio, where she began developing new works. In 2020 she won the Arts Council England DYCP award and became a teacher of Flying Low and Passing Through techniques after studying intensively at the Tic Tac Art Centre in Brussels with David Zambrano.
In 2021 she started working on the new production Your Story, supported by Company Blu of Florence and Arts Council England and In Medias Res a study on the art of history.
Irene is a guest teacher at various academies, universities and training courses including Northern School Of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, Verve Company (Master course), Laban, Try Lucca, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and regularly collaborates with the studio Trip Space in London.
